I keep trying different thing, but no matter what I do the three content panes just show up on top of each other. The very last content pane that currently contains a rich:gmap should be shwoing up on the right side of the page, next to the project explorer that holds a rich:tree.

Like this:

Here is the two versions of code I have tried, and at one point it did work, but as soon as I changed the main content pane it got all messed up again.

I find it unlikely that your JSF pages are working or not working at random; it's fairly deterministic. It's more likely to be a deployment or back-end issue.

JSF seems an... interesting choice for someone not terribly familiar with Java--IMO that's too much to learn all at once.

Ha, tell me about it!
But unfortunately I don't have a choice on this matter.
In addition to JSF I have been learning HttPClient, SimpleXML, JavaScript...plus I have never even made an actual web page before...Java is pretty much all I have had any experience in and although I was the top student in my class and java does come to me easy most of the time, once you try to mix in all these other things I have never worked with it does get pretty overwhelming.
I guess you could say Im taking a self taught crash course

And actually I did make a change I realized. I played around a bit with the layout.xhtml page that is the ui template so Im sure that was it. It is looking like I want it to now. If I could only get my damn rich faces tree to work I would be right where Im supposed to be too. ><

But I sent an email to the contacts at the company Im doing this for to let them know Im moving on from the tree and will come back to it if there is time after the other stuff.
Next in line, I need to create a form for users to add a project. Mostly simple stuff, except I need it to call a method that will add the data to a web service that stores it in xml form, so once again I will b combinign java, httpclient, simplexml, and jsf/
I have the method wirtten that will do this for adding devices, but adding projects is a bit more complicated. I'm, sure i'll do it sooner than I would finsih the tree though.
I gotta tell you its pretty depressing to have spent so much time on this richfaces tree and not have much to show for it

perhaps I should try on more post to see if someone here knosws what the problem is. I mean Ive gotten past the point of all the other posts I made here, I didnt even bother posting my most recent issue with it, maybe I just have one more step.... I can always hope I guess

So yeah, here is the thread if someone is up for a challenge:
