Viruses from a JPG

We had a security briefing yesterday telling us to be suspicious of e-mail attachments from unknown senders. (Duh) They claimed even opening a JPG or possibly a GIF could lead to being infected. I'm skeptical. Has anyone ever got a virus from a picture file? How about a PDF?

I haven't, at least not that I know of. But they aren't just making that stuff up. Google for "jpg exploit" and you'll see what I mean.

And I just googled for "pdf exploit". Yup, them too.

These have been out in the wild I think since 2000 or 2004.

Myspace was serving up spyware through an ad with a wmf file. All you had to do was goto the site with IE and you got infected.

What? I thought IE was secure.

Is that the one that thaws all the food in your freezer?

A good question is never answered. It is not a bolt to be tightened into place but a seed to be planted and to bear more seed toward the hope of greening the landscape of the idea. John Ciardi
