The don't think the SCJD section changes much. The K&B book only gives overview of SCJD and some pointers like code conversion, decision making, etc. If you really want to understand SCJD a bit in depth, try the Andrew Monkhouse SCJD with Java 5 book or Alan Trottier Exam Cram book. Either gives a more in depth look and the topics needed that are covered in SCJD.
Well it really depends on your experience and knowledge of the SCJD topics. Does K&B book cover Swing, RMI/Sockets, Java I/O from a hands-on approach? Don't think so. However, Andrew's or Exam Cram book does. Besides if you don't already got the assignment, either book will guide you through a sample project. If you already download the assignment, either book can provide insights to certain parts of the project.
