Hi,

I used the book's version for Java 1.4, when I took my SCJP 1.4 (btw, thanks to the authors, I missed only 2 questions).

I am planning to take the SCJD. I want to use the latest Java out there (1.6.x).

I already have the old book on 1.4, which includes an SCJD section.

Can I use those chapters, or are there much more help on the new book versions (in terms of the SCJD portion only)?

The don't think the SCJD section changes much. The K&B book only gives overview of SCJD and some pointers like code conversion, decision making, etc. If you really want to understand SCJD a bit in depth, try the Andrew Monkhouse SCJD with Java 5 book or Alan Trottier Exam Cram book. Either gives a more in depth look and the topics needed that are covered in SCJD.

But assuming that you used the first part of the concerned (Sierra/Bates) book for SCJP, its 2nd part should be enough for the SCJD. Am I correct?

I am just trying zero in into as less book to study as I can.

I am sure that Andrew's book would help, but I think this (Sierra/Bates) SCJP book's second part should be enough.

Well it really depends on your experience and knowledge of the SCJD topics. Does K&B book cover Swing, RMI/Sockets, Java I/O from a hands-on approach? Don't think so. However, Andrew's or Exam Cram book does. Besides if you don't already got the assignment, either book will guide you through a sample project. If you already download the assignment, either book can provide insights to certain parts of the project.
