Problem with ajax implementation using Jquery

I am new to jquery. I am trying to implement ajax using Jquery. Following is my javascript code.

When i click on the button its giving me the alert popup with membername enterd but somehow the request is not passing to the servlet. Following is the servlet mapping in web.xml

Please suggest me what can be the problem.

USe a tool like Fiddler or Firebug and watch the XMLHttpRequest. Doe it go out? What status code does it return?
