Hi, I can understand you. But the worst thing is not what co workers do, it's what managers do. We used to have our own office space. But nowadays it's all one big room because managers think we then communicate better. But the fact is that in the big open office space, there is always that one co worker that doesnt go to his job to earn money, pay mortgage and support his familly, but goes to the office to get attention.
The most irritating person I ever, ever met was a German unmarried woman of say 300 kilograms. She went to the office to upgrade her social contacts or something. Now with 300 kilograms, you have a large, say body volume to encrease your voice volume. Then also, for getting attention, she would giggle like she was acting or something. Just like, if I giggle I get attention, and they all like me or so. Like being exageratedly happy, happy, happy.
And with the open office room our manager arranged for us, she got an audience of 40 people she could draw attention from and suck energy from. Blas, it was the worst person I ever had to work with. And no dear manager I did not communicate better since at the moment she entered the room I put wax plugs into my ears!!!

You can do that, but at the end of the year, you will have this manager that is going to explain to you, you do not have social skills since you shut yourself off from your coworkers, and that all projects that had impossible plannings, were late for your lack of communication. This while you used the bleeding headphones in the first place, to concentrate and get the job done on time.
Been there, seen that......

Hi Marc, I am very sorry for your experience, mine is not THAT bad though. I told my manager about this and it seems he is facing the same problem and he is more frustrated with his people who irritate him during working than I get frustrated with my irritators. He just went ahead and ordered noise cancellation head phones which not many of us would like to spend out of our pocket.
For me, it's pretty much just the yappers. The ones that like to talk and socialize when there's work to be done. I do have my own retaliatory measures though. Usually, I just ignore them and they go away. If that doesn't work a shameless dose of flatulence clears them out .
Not just work, at times when you really serious on a telephone conversation, just by taking for granted the co-workers-and-colleagues-and-friends shout intentionally and they tend to utter some controversial statements of yours!
Though at times enjoyable, sometimes it IS irritating!
Only way possible is you take a revenge whenever possible But somehow we don't feel that is good!
