The %JBOSS_HOME%/bin folder contains the run.sh script. From the command prompt just type run.sh to start the server

asliyanage@2006cs119:~/software/jboss-4.2.2.GA/bin$ run.sh

You should use ./run.sh. By default the current directory is not in the PATH.

At the command prompt, type cd /home/asliyanage/software/jboss-4.2.2.GA/bin/ and press the enter key. Then type ./run.sh & and press enter key again. Hope this works for you.
