How many String objects will be created when this method is invoked?
A. 1
B. 2
C. 3
D. 4
E. 5
F. 6

I think the answer is 6, but somebody says it 3. Please confirm!

Every step one object is created.so totally 5 objects

I dont know the real source of the question. My friend forwarded me some questions.

I do agree with you that 5 object would be created.
But to justify three, I would say:
"Fred" and "47" would not be the String objects in Heap, but would be created in String Pool.
Is that justification correct for answer 3?
