I am reminded of a perestroika-era Russian political cartoon.

A teacher and her students are standing around a desk. It has a picture of a computer and a lump of gray material on it. She says, "Segodnia my budem lepit' kompiuter glinoi." (Today we're going to make a computer out of modeling clay.) [I might not be remembering the Russian exactly correctly. It's been a long time.]

Of course I'm a total Mac guy, so take this with a grain of salt

Why does everyone think that Macs are so expensive? My experience is that they might be a little more expensive, but if you put any value on your time at all, that small extra expense will be paid back in personal productivity within the first week or two.

What am I missing?

I don't get it either, but I hear it all the time. "Oh I'd love to get a Mac but I can't afford it so I'll get this comparably-equipped Dell that costs more".

I don't get it either. When I have checked recently, a Mac Book Pro is priced about the same as a Lenovo Thinkpad or business class HP or Dell.

They are more expensive than the junk loss leaders sold at BestBuy, but those things are barely better than an Asus Eee

And the new all-in-one Macs that look like flat panel displays are very competitive.

Comparing a Mac to a no-name beige box is not fair. Compare brand name, business class boxes, and I don't see any real difference in price.

I sure do see a difference in IT support costs. The Macs win that without effort

I don't get it either.

The times I've spent "too much" for a computer were the times I bought PCs (IBM, Dell, Gateway...). My Macs have been terrific values.
