so you have to start wondering...

Google is the dominant search engine. they have a browser. They have an MS-Office-like suite of programs. They will soon have an OS.

Will THEY get in trouble like MS did for illegal market practices? they are becoming more and more like MS every day...

Unlikely. Remember, having a monopoly is not illegal. Using your monopoly to exclude competitors from the market place, like how MS threatened to not sell Windows to PC manufacturers who installed Netscape, IS illegal. I haven't seen any such behavior from Google.

I think MS also got in trouble for tightly integrating their browser with their OS, basically forcing it onto every PC with Windows installed and claiming it couldn't be separated.

I'm just saying that Google will need to be careful they don't fall into some of the same traps. Both companies may honestly believe they are doing the right thing, but sometimes they don't see it from the same perspective as everyone else.

No one can ever unseat MS from its position of developers of the finest OS in the world. Many came, they all tried and they all failed, competing with MS is futile and stupid. This one shall ultimately meet the same fate. Wait till you see when Windows 7 becomes available to the general public - Google's party will come to an end that very day. Long live Mr. Gates!

Arvind, I don't think you ever will be like EFH if you keep heaping praise on MS and Bill Gates.

but seriously, just because nobody HAD dethroned MS, doesn't mean nobody WILL. For years, it was thought nobody could ever de-throne the U.S. Big Four automakers. Then, guess what happened? one of them vanished completly, leaving the Big Three...all of which are now in serious peril and fighting for their lives.

Even Toyota, currently the largest auto maker in the world (I think) is starting to have to look at declining sales...

further, just because Windows is the greatest now (and I would argue that), that doesn't mean it's the greatest that CAN BE.

Given that Google's stuff is slated for release quite a while after Windows 7 that's a mighty strange statement.

Well I was assuming that google had already started the party and they were all busy massaging their ni****s with excitement over what they were going to do to MS. Bunch of jealous &%&$%$!!

I hope that google remembers that karma is a b*** and sometimes she works a double shift. Starting today I dump google once and for all in favor of bing(and urge everyone to do so) for even contemplating the idea of competing with MS in their core competence.

Google needs to worry about karma, but Microsoft doesn't ?!?!? WTF ???

Is that because Microsoft is so big (and powerful), that karma is afraid of it ??

I'd hardly associate Microsoft with Chuck Norris. More like Mr. Bean.

And I'd advice anyone thinking that Windows is a good example of an OS to study OS theory first. Just saying...

I'm so glad that they invented Sundays. Otherwise the weekend would be only one day long!

On the other hand, walruses also like a good Maple Walnut Sundae.

News about Google's Chrome OS was all over the Internet yesterday, and a lot of websites were presenting it as if it was "bad news for Microsoft". I think that is greatly exaggerated and they are just saying that for the sensational effect.

Even operating systems that have long been there and that are excellent, such as Mac OS X and Ubuntu, haven't made a really significant dent in Microsoft's dominance on the desktop. Why should we expect Google's Chrome OS to do so? Just because it's Google?

I'll believe it when I see it, and not before.

So what? There are also lots of companies that make software for Mac OS X and lots of companies that support Ubuntu or other flavours of Linux.

The Google Chrome OS is vaporware. Wake me up when they release it. Even if they just release it to developers.

IBM used to do a lot of this, called either Press Release Ware.
or more often, FUD, Fear Uncertainy and Doubt. Freeze the market with annoucements, that may or may not turn into product.

If you read the Google release, they are aiming Chrome the OS at a specific niche: clients of the cloud.

perhaps that is a market, or will be in the future, but today, there is no such market.

I'm not understanding how this whole cloud computing idea works in the boondocks. There are lots of places in the US without broadband Internet access, and no cell phone access. Granted, there are not a lot of people there, either, but we are talking about a lot of square miles (or square kilometers). I assume that India and China also have huge areas with bad network infrastructure, and they are likely to have lots of people living there. So wake me up after Google delivers this, and provides cloud access everywhere.

Um, Pat. Chrome is already out. And as I said back there, that in and of itself is an OS. Now it is an OS that is running on another OS. But it can definitely be considered an OS, even if it doesn't look like an OS as you think of it. The OS is changing, and Google is showing us that new definition of an OS.

I suppose google could make an OS that is par with windows, but is written in java so it is easy to run on damn near anything. And, of course, very java friendly. And, if google wanted to, maybe they would give it away for free - for a while. And put just as much marketing behind it as ms puts behind windows.

Supposing that osx is 10% of the market and linux is 5% and google manages to get 45% - that would leave 40% for ms.

Just a thought.

Actually it isn't difference. Chrome the browser is the core of the OS. Chrome the Browser really is the OS. Everything on top of it are the applications.

I think Chrome OS will be more of a push into the 'cloud mentality'. a lot like I hope Palm's webOS will be for smart phones. I don't think it necessarily will be a success by itself, but if it draws enough attention to get more web applications built then it could help in reshaping the landscape (in a way Google has been pushing and wishing for for a very long time).

One of the problems with Linux and Macs is that it costs a lot of time to develop and support an application for an OS that not a lot of people use. You get more bang for your buck by just developing for Windows. So Windows is most popular because of all the apps, and all the apps flock to Windows because it is popular.

What Chrome OS can do is redirect that a bit. Any application for Chrome OS will work on Windows, Linux, OSX, or any OS with a browser. You design for the web. Now it becomes easier to develop for the Chrome OS, and everyone else without extra cost. That takes a bit of the advantage off of Windows and moves it to other operating systems which could compete on being easier to user, more stable or secure, or whatever marketing points they want to make.

That is what I look forward to :-)

I dont understand how Google can provide an OS for free , provided the huge investment it takes to build an OS and supporting it through Security patches and other stuff throughout its Life Cycle.
Will they make an Ad-supported OS like their search engine?

Imagine Opening an Word document and an Ad popping out along with it.
That would be so irritating

By the way , MS is moving into Surface Computing . By the time Chrome is released , Surface Computing will become the order of the day ,and i dont understand how Chrome can compete with it
I dont think it will be a competition to MS , at best it may end up fighting with Ubuntu and other Unix flavors
