this could go in jobs discussion, but it's pretty meaningless...

the other day, i printed something (yes, i killed a few more trees, but that's not what i want to discuss). As i picked up my document, i noticed that my print job used the last piece of paper in the tray.

am i morally/ethically bound to re-fill it myself, simply because I emptied it? is the person who EMPTIES the tray the one who needs to re-fill it, or should it be the person who next NEEDS something (which is often the same person when you are printing a multi-page document).

My colleagues couldn't agree...

thoughts?

Isn't this outlined in your company's subscribed ISO standards?

I think it's good general policy for it to be the responsibility of the person who last consumed the resource. With paper in a copier it doesn't make a bit difference usually, but other resources may take time to restock / reorder, and it's best to get that process started before the resource is actually needed again. This is most true for something like toilet paper.

Obviously, you should refill it. (Unless you don't feel like it.)

This is one of the reason I never flush at my place of work cause I know there would be others that might want to pee into the same water and the last person would then have that responsibility to flush. Though its been a few months and were still waiting, I fully agree.

When in doubt, self-interest and self-preservation should guide the way.

Friends, family, loved ones and integrity - those are the things you must rid yourself if you wish to become successful in life.

What I do is observe the behaviours of others on this, and adjust my employment strategy to balance risks of looking for job on a scale that is pegged by the behaviour at a workplace. General points that are routinely peggable ( can be assigned values ) provide a scale, including how chaotic the scale behaves as well as it's range. When the scale is tangible - I hold that against risks of looking for employment.

In my industry, it is standard and normal for one to keep a stamped self addressed envelope on the sun visor of the vehicle. Those who don't will not make it as supervisors.

We don't need to flush at mine, we have one of those modern style airport restrooms with automatic flushers and water-turner-on'ers.

This actually poses a good idea to an inventor that could invent an automatic paper refiller, automatic coffee rebrewer, etc. and elegantly roll into This thread.

Aloha,
Doug

who would refill the refiller.......I am trying hard not to add a star wars quote to the end of that.

More importantly if you printed job fails, should you kill the print job, so others can use the printer, or just randomly chose a different printer?
The MD's perhaps....10minutes before an important company communications meeting?
