You've heard what the lottery is, right? A tax on people who are bad at math.

i prefer to think of it as a 'license to dream' tax.

also, the problem with "i'm a nice guy, i should win" is that there are LOTS of nice guys. so, you're share would be... a penny?

I worked with a guy who did the hardcore randomization testing for lotteries, etc. He said that you have a positive but tiny probablility of winning any lottery, and if you buy a ticket, it gets larger, but not in any meaningful sense.

Here is the an example of what i get often.

FROM THE DESK OF MRS JOMBO EDITH
BILL AND EXCHANGE MANAGER
FOREIGN REMITTANCE DEPT
BANK OF AFRICA (BOA)
OUAGADOUGOU BURKINA FASO
TELE/ +226 75 09 14 40.

DEAR FRIEND ,

I AM THE MANAGER OF BILL AND EXCHANGE AT THE FOREIGN REMITTANCE DEPARTMENT OF THE BANK OF AFRICA. I SAW YOUR CONTACTS IN INTERNET SEARCH,AFTER MUCH CONSIDERATION I DECIDED TO WRITE YOU SINCE I CANNOT BE ABLE TO SEE YOU FACE TO FACE AT FIRST.

I WILL LIKE YOU TO TAKE YOUR TIME TO READ THIS MAIL CAREFULLY. I DID NOT MEAN TO EMBARRASS YOU WITH MY BUSINESS PROPOSAL BUT I SERIOUSLY NEED YOUR ASSISTANCE. PLEASE THIS IS A CONFIDENTIAL MATTER AND IT REQUIRES URGENCY.

IN MY DEPARTMENT WE DISCOVERED AN ABANDONED SUM OF U.S$12.5M DOLLARS (TWELVE MILLION FIVE HUNDRED THOUSAND USD) IN AN ACCOUNT THAT BELONGS TO ONE OF OUR FOREIGN CUSTOMER WHO DIED ALONG WITH HIS ENTIRE FAMILY ON MONDAY,31 JULY,2000, IN A PLANE CRASH , SINCE WE GOT INFORMATION ABOUT HIS DEATH, WE HAVE BEEN EXPECTING HIS OR HER NEXT OF KIN TO COME OVER AND CLAIM HIS MONEY BECAUSE WE CAN NOT RELEASE IT UNLESS SOME BODY APPLIES FOR IT AS NEXT OF KIN OR RELATION TO THE DECEASED AS INDICATED IN OUR BANKING GUIDELINES AND LAWS, BUT UNFORTUNATELY WE LEARNT THAT HIS SUPPOSED NEXT OF KIN DIED ALONG SIDE WITH HIM AT THE PLANE CRASH LEAVING NOBODY BEHIND FOR THE CLAIM.

IT IS THEREFORE UPON THIS DISCOVERY, I NOW DECIDED TO MAKE THIS BUSINESS PROPOSAL TO YOU AND RELEASE THE MONEY TO YOU AS THE NEXT OF KIN OR RELATION TO THE DECEASED FOR SAFETY AND SUBSEQUENT DISBURSEMENT SINCE NOBODY IS COMING FOR IT AND I DON'T WANT THIS MONEY TO GO INTO THE BANK TREASURY AS UNCLAIMED BILL. THE BANKING LAW AND GUIDINE HERE STIPULATES THAT IF SUCH MONEY REMAINED UNCLAIMED AFTER EIGHT YEARS AND SIX MONTHS, THE MONEY WILL BE TRANSFERRED INTO THE BANK AS UNCLAIMED BILL I THEREFORE AGREE THAT 40% OF THIS MONEY WILL BE FOR YOU AS FOREIGNER PARTNER, IN RESPECT TO THE PROVISION OF A FOREIGN ACCOUNT, 10% WILL BE SET ASIDE FOR EXPENSES INCURRED DURING THE BUSINESS AND 50% WOULD BE FOR ME. THERE AFTER I WILL VISIT YOUR COUNTRY FOR DISBURSEMENT ACCORDING TO THE PERCENTAGES INDICATED.

THEREFORE, TO ENABLE THE IMMEDIATE TRANSFER OF THIS FUND TO YOU AS ARRANGED, YOU MUST APPLY FIRST TO THE BANK AS RELATION OR NEXT OF KIN TO THE DECEASED INDICATING YOUR BANK NAME, YOUR BANK ACCOUNT NUMBER, YOUR PRIVATE TELEPHONE AND FAX NUMBER FOR EASY AND EFFECTIVE COMMUNICATION AND LOCATION WHERE IN THE MONEY WILL BE REMITTED. I WILL NOT FAIL TO BRING TO YOUR NOTICE THAT THIS TRANSACTION IS HITCH-FREE AND THAT YOU SHOULD NOT ENTERTAIN ANY ATOM OF FEAR AS ALL REQUIRED ARRANGEMENTS HAVE BEEN MADE FOR THE TRANSFER.

YOU SHOULD CONTACT ME IMMEDIATELY AS SOON AS YOU RECEIVE THIS LETTER. TRUSTING TO HEAR FROM YOU IMMEDIATELY.

YOURS FAITHFULLY
MRS JOMBO EDITH

Yeah, but... If I buy a ticket every week, I'm bound to win at some point -- probably within a year or two. Don't you think?

Vishal, those emails are misleading. They claim you will get 40% of the $12.5 million, which should be about $5 million. But the most I've ever cleared after following through was about $3.2 million.

Ha! Maybe if I was leaving it to chance like most players. But I have a system that gives me an edge: I always play the same numbers that won last time. At some point, the same numbers will win twice in a row, and the moment this happens, I'll have the winning ticket.

That's only one factor they look at when choosing a winner.

That smells a bit fishy if you ask me. Most of the abandoned millions have now been claimed and given to people like you and me(and by you and me I mainly mean Marc Weber) and I doubt they still have more left. Mine has a tracking number attached and it clearly states I was picked from an exclusive oline draw of individuals and corporate bodies. I feel good knowing about this process and that its not just somebody playing games.

Sometimes a lot less, so be careful. $3.2 million is the most I've cleared on one of these 419 deals. The average ends up closer to $1.7 million -- about 67% below the amount they entice you with. I suppose if they were up front about netting only $1.7 million, no one would respond.

Instead of $ xx million, you will probably get minus $ xx thousand.

The trick with these things is that they tell you that you need to put some money on a bank account, which is supposedly necessary to send the millions to you. What happens is that they take the money you put on that account and you'll never hear from them again.

Ashok, congratulations on winning the MICROSOFOT PROMOTIMON AWARD!

Hmmm... The Microsoft (or "MICROSOFOT") claims agent uses a Yahoo mail account. I guess they were really expecting that deal to go through.
