What do you mean by "connect"? phpMyAdmin is a web application - where does JDBC fit in?

phpmyadmin is just a DB client; it is not needed to access the DB. If you want to write Java code to access the DB then JDBC is the way to go. If you're unfamiliar with JDBC, there's a tutorial on java.sun.com.

ok so phpmyadmin is a client which maintains a DB, so how do i access that DB .I am not trying to ask the syntax or things like that..
I want to know where the database is stored or what is the name of the database to which i need to connect so as to access the database..

If you have access to the phpmyadmin client, then you should be able to find the information somewhere inside of its settings. If not, ask the DB admin.
