I don't understand where do we lack? Probabilities(due to population) should be high for us like china but, instead we need to pray to get single medal.
- Improper resource utilization?
- Lack of funding(turn into infrastructure)
- Or we really lack in almost all competitions?(I don't think)
technically, the Olympics started Wednesday. because of the length and number of games, and the mandatory rest requirements between games, the football/soccer matches begin before the opening ceremony.

I guess India never fully imitated the European sporting culture. (Cricket would be one exception.)
I imagine America wouldn't as well as India if someone staged a big international Hatha Yoga competition...

I don't think resource constraint is a reason...Even small and very poor african countries like Ethiopia and Uganda win more medals than us..
I think India has bleak chances of winning more than totally 3-4 medals in olympics 2008...
1.Cricket has killed every other game..It has become rare to see kids playing anything other than cricket... 2.People like to watch useless bollywood, kollywood and tollywood movies or a 10 hour cricket match during weekends rather than take part in some sports activities..How many of us really jog at least 1 km everyday...? 3.Parents emphasis only on academics..In other countries parents encourage kids to take part in multiple sports...But here in India parents just want their kids to become a doctor or an engineer...
Unless all the above things changes our olympic medal tally also will not change.. The founder of olympic commitee Baron de coburtin has said about olympics -"The important thing is not winning but taking part"..We have taken that seriously and we will continue doing it [ August 07, 2008: Message edited by: Rambo Prasad ]

No, it isn't a stellar record, is it? Other countries get medals by specializing. Somebody mentioned Ethiopia? Take a look, you'll find their medals all came from distance running. And Canada does ice hockey -- although that isn't going to help us in Beijing. But India could at least work on their field hockey team.

Mostly because as a poor, sparely settled country, folks in Ethiopia would run from place to place. Kenya has had some success in running as well.
It takes decades of hard work to be an Olympic-class athlete. There are no short cuts. Up until the early 1960s, all the competitors were rich, as everyone else had to earn a living. Then the geopolitics let "soldiers" compete, so a fair number of countries had soldiers who trained at sport 300 days or more each year.

In a setback for India on the first day of The Games at Bejing, shooters Anjali Bhagwat and Avneet Kaur Sidhu today (August 9) failed to enter the finals of the Women's 10 meter Air Rifle event. Anjali finished 29th with 393 points, while Avneet Kaur failed to progress to the next round bowing out in the qualification stage, finishing 39th with 389 points. Source
I was shocked to hear the news that India got gold medal. Now newspapers will become optimistic and list down chances where India will get more medals. Lot of discussions will happen today in TV channels.
Now what Abhinav can expect?: 1)Rs.100000 from PM's fund 2)Rs. 1,0000000 from Punjab Govt. 3)Padma Shree/Padma Vibhushan by next year 4)Gift of 501 rifles from Sahara Parivar 5)Small golden idols from countless sports clubs spread across the country. 6)Abhinav appearing in Pepsi/Coke/Parker Pen(thats better) ads getting 1 crore deal each. 7)Countless sport clubs sponsoring shooting events every week end. 8)Children/people with posters-'Abhinav we are proud of you' everywhere at traffic signal.
ok, lets guess what will happen tomorrow: 1)TOI headline-Shooting star!! 2)Abhinav's parents/sister on 'how since age 2,he dreamt of winning in Olympic.and how with toy gun he used to aim at everything. 3)His friends on his exceptional grit and determination. 4)TOI's editorial-"We need to produce more Abhinavs.. than Sachins" 5)Air Tel/Reliance sponsoring next national shooting event. 6)Sports journalists on how shooting required tremendous concentration, quick decision, tactics. 7)Some CMM IT company's CEO to employees-"Focus on target and shoot the problem like Abhinav did"
There are is no infra strucute for sports, do you see a running track or a sports stadium in a small town or village in a school( for that matter how many schools in metro cities have infra structure for sports ?)..No there is no concrete process of recognizing talent from bottom up., Sports have not been part of indian life style we are still living on the sport british introduced in India cricket. Probably it will be few more generations before we straigten everything and have innovatie fresh and competetive ideas. Its good to see a gold medal but i am not proud of this because we deserve a lot more than this

If Adam Gilchrist gets his way, you can look forward to a possible medal in 2020.
