I am in Chennai,India.
and I need to get a laptop
Budget : Rs 40000 to Rs 50000.
Suggestions/comments WELCOME!!!

Apple!
I believe that if you factor in the value of your time, OS X makes Apples cheaper than computers running other OSs.

I agree that MacOS is better than Windoze, but this is JavaRanch, we do Java here, and Apple has been fairly hostile towards Java.
Is there a JVM 1.6 for OS-X yet?

Hostile? Hardly. OS X is a great platform for Java. Granted, there's a lag until the latest and greatest version gets ported, but I'd hardly call that "hostile".
And yes, 1.6 is available for 64-bit machines,

I switched to Macs a few years ago, and running Java has been pain-free. It's all installed and ready to go. No downloads, installations, or paths to mess with. (Plus, Java GUIs look cool on OS X.)
Was it a "pain" before I switched?

Well, I remember on my old Powerbook 540, the JDK 1.0 implementation was a little tricky. Granted, you had to download it from Sun and install it. And the main problem was that System 7 didn't have a command line.
Since then it's been pretty smooth.

Cost-wise you will find HP-Compaq presario cheaper. Challenger Computers and Devaraj Computers (near LIC) are the distributors i normally rely on. If you go for HP, do not forget to check out promotions on HP site.

Brand-wise I would prefer Dell. It may cost you 2-3 thousand more than HP for almost same configuration, but its a different feeling when you have your laptop arriving at your doorstep with the color you want. I am eyeing on 1525, rates dont seem to be getting lower anymore, may be i have to wait for one-two months to save some bucks.
