hi everyone..first of all let me thank you all for creating and contributing to such a wonderful and helpful website.
for last few threads , i am seeing a lot of members are speaking of ' retirement of SCJP 5.0 too soon'
i am planning to take the exam (310-055) in early(or mid-) september and these informations are scaring me to death.
can anybody please tell me if sun publishes notifications well ahead of the retirement date..all i mean is that ,in your opinion,is it safe to hope that retirement will not be done before the end of september?
my voucher has an expiry date of 30th september,2009...and i am having a very hectic schedule these days ,so its impossible for me to switch to SCJP 1.6 now.

There will be some pieces of information (I guess on Sun's website) about the retirement.
They will publish it 3 months in advance.
You can sleep well

Yes. SUN will announce it 90 days before the retirement.

There's not much different in SCJP 6 with 5. Won't be a problem I guess. Check the ScjpFaq for more info.
And Welcome to Javaranch

thanks to you both..now i really really can sleep well.
however , one more thing(i am being a bit silly perhaps).. as the pattern changed and i see a lot of examtakers talking about difficulty level being changed , they are mostly talking about SCJP 1.6 .Such observations about SCJP 1.5 will be of great help to the people who are going to appear in the 5.0 version.
So, if anybody comes to know anything about if the level of difficulty for 310-055 has gone up further or remained unchanged more or less
again, thank you guys, i really didn't expected such prompt reply

the only difference is the number of correct answers expected in 5 is lesser than 6. That's all

Just go for the Java 6 exam! The differences between the Java 5 and the Java 6 exams are tiny and the Java 6 exam has the advantage of being the much newer one.
I'm pretty sure Sun will let you change from 5 to 6, maybe a small fee?

"head first java" -best thing in my entire college life (includes non academic stuff too )
"Sun Certified Programmer for Java 5 : exam study guide" -just have started , and i am liking it
and now you see the author of those two books is talking to you ,personally
first then
yeahhhhhhhhhhhhhh
however the "fees" portion was a little unclear to me . I thought that i can appear in any of the both exams with same voucher..so what incurs further expense?was that a joke?

Yes you can do that. Also as everyone (including Bert) is saying, please go for SCJP 6. Even if you have the SCJP 5 book, you can easily give the SCJP 6 exam with a little reading of the java docs or a tutorial on the internet...
