Employers have never been big on advertising for entry-level IT people, and I'm going back decades when I say that. Having a recession on just makes it worse.

It was hard for me, too. Unfortunately, getting in is as much a social skill as a technical one, and social skills aren't what our profession is noted for.

I agree.
But in India, IT companies used to recruit entry level IT people from campus ( final year of engineering and other computer science degrees/post graduation etc. ). So Now because of recession, these companies are not recruiting entry level IT people. Anyway they never advertise for entry level people.

On-campus recruiting is common in the USA, as well. But it definitely does drop when the economy is bad.

Do not assume that if company does not give you a job , you cannot get an experience. Forgot about certifications , get your hands dirty by writing some code.
There are tons of things you can do out there , why wait for some one to tell you what to do.
Create a web based application for some generic utility.
Use Facebook API's to create some application

The web is littered over with tutorials
You can get some on hibernate , JSF here http://www.skill-guru.com/blog/category/programming/

You want an idea , mail me and I will give you a concept , tutorials , domain name to create site.

Differentiate your self from other students by adding some value.
