I now want to get into hotel or resort management. I would like to manage a resort in the Maldives or maybe run a ski lodge somewhere in Switzerland(preferably). I would need to go back to school for this. Should I do it? Is it too late for me in my mid 20s? What experience as a J2EE developer can I use in that resort business? How will I tell this to my parents, they'll be really angry so should I just run away from home? What would you do?

If I were you, I would first run away and join the army - or the army of a friendly nation. Your parents would be upset, sure. But then when you run away from that to become a hotel manager they would be happy. Your brief stay in the military might provided much-needed contacts for the hotel and travel industry as well.

p.s. If you are young enough that you worry about telling your parents because they will get angry, then you are definitely not too old for a change in career.

I disagree on this point. He should wait until he is 40 or 50, then think back to how many options he had in his mid-20's and get someone to kick him.

Getting someone to kick him now won't have the same effect, but I'm prepared to try if he is.

With your people skills, you should do extremely well in the world of resort management.

Hi Arvind

You parents might not agree with your decision because they are not sure if you can pull it off.
This may be because you never did some this very responsible in your life till date. But you have to start at some point of your life. My advise is, start taking responsibilities at your home, let them feel that you are getting mature and can handle your stuff as well as other's stuff (thats what is required in hoteling industry). Once they are confident of your abilities they will not have any objection on your carees decisions.

Another good excercise would be, you give us few reasons why your idea of switching to hotel business is worth considering. Try to convince us (You can be sure that we are not going to yell at you). You might have done some study of the market and thought of the source of finance. If you can support your decision in this forum you will get the confidence to take this matter forward with your parents.

All the best.
Regards,
Nitin

P.S. I am not asking you to reveal your business secrets. Keep them to yourself.

Thank you all. I realize I have alot to think about and evaluate before I take such a step. Sometimes I think, that maybe I am just going through some sort of quarter life crises and need more toys and/or sleazy women(if i could just find one, God help me) in my life. Maybe getting an i-phone or something will help me get over this feeling of listlessness. I want to thank Ernest for you comment about having great people skills, I try my best to be well liked and respected by everyone so your comment really means alot to me. Nitin, you've raised some great points that I will mull over. A special thank you to you all for not being so judgmental or condescending in any way. If there is anything I hate about people is when they try to treat others in that kind of way. By the way, condescending means when someone is trying to be patronizing with you or talking down to you.

Try the iPhone first. If it solves the problem, that's a cheap and easy fix. If it doesn't solve the problem, you'll still be happy with the phone.

"Sleazy" women will only make things worse.

If -- after evaluating these things -- you decide a career change is really what you want, don't hesitate.

I think he is more concerned if they will kick him out of their will.

If you are seriously considering a career change, and are conscious and care about the environment, I think you will love this job.
Recent studies have proven that the hole in the Ozone layer is playing havoc with the environment. Penguins too are part of the environment.
The job profile is as follows:
1) Go to the north pole
2) Setup a table and chair
3) Penguins will line up
4) You greet them, shake their flipper, ask their name and feed it into the database. *
5) Move on to the south pole, repeat

*You should be careful here while wishing the penguins as they are known to be temperamental, sensitive and touchy. As you know, a day lasts for 6 months on the poles and you might be tempted to say "Good Morning" when actually it is night. You should be verrry careful about such a faux pas.

I know you are more inclined towards hotel management. But hey, how many eco friendly resorts do you know of? Are they even hiring? I am sure you will make it to the front page of National Geographic this way. If your parents read it, they might even welcome you back with open arms.

The only problem with Maneesh's suggestion is that there are too many polar bears at the South Pole, so you are liable to be eaten alive.

Most of the Polar bears might have migrated else where because of the climate changes; that reminds me, be wary of the changes in climate if you do go there!

The problem with Maneesh's and Campbell's proposals is that there are no penguins on the north pole and no polar bears on the south pole.
