Reading about experience of other ranchers who cleared SCJP helped me in one way or the
other so I am sharing mine:
I have been reading Java for about a year now even though I work on Android platform.
And I was planning to take SCJP exam since quite some time. Finally, I took the test this morning
and cleared it with 93%. After, I took the test, I realized why they dont print the actual
score on the certificate. From my experience, questions in the real exam are very easy as compared to questions in
Examlab/Master Exam/KSB exercises/Khaled Mughals book.IMHO it is very easy to score 100% in the exam if you understand the trick(that the questions are only tricky; not difficult).
Following is what I read and referred:
SCJP6 book -Kathy Sierra and Bert Bates[even if you read this book(IN and OUT) alone, it is enough]Threads, Inner classes and Garbage Collection from Khaled Mughal and Rolf Rassmussen 3rd EditionExceptions and Arrays from JLS Edition3Generics Tutorials on Sun site, Generics FAQs maintained by Angelika LangerAPI docs for list of all Runtime exceptions that looked familiar and Collection classes and interfacesArticles/posts on JavaWorld,JavaRanch, java.sun, IBM developer works,Deepak Balas SCJP6 articles
on topics that I just wanted to read about.
Test Simulators -
ExamLab Simulator - Devaka Cooray[this is the toughest; it mirrors the actual exam s/w almost perfectly]LearnKey - Master ExamWhizLabs Diagonostic exam(free version where they ask only 25 questions )
Reading the exam objectives will help you get a picture of type of questions to expect in the exam.
If you wan to score well, read, practice and revise.
With the SCJP -
"Its not what you know its when you know it" KSB chap01 Page 67
.
Finally, thanks to all the authors for writing such wonderful books, writers of simulator softwares and to all the bartender and ranchers for their help.
Cheers.

Just a weird point... Is something in this certification which made you go for it. Or its just an "awareness" &-|| "acclaim".

I'm not Monu, but still I would like to respond, SCJP and other such certifications look good on your resume && give you good knowledge. Certifications help you to prove to employers that you have good knowledge (to a certain extent)...

I know this is a zombie thread but I wouldn't pass a question put to me!

+1
It certainly does look good on the resume and it gives a rough idea to the employers about what to expect from the guy sitting across the table.

SCJP happened to me. I never worked on core Java for as long as I would've liked(only 5 months); I was interested in it. I read lots of stuff and I wanted to put myself to test just so to know how well I know the language. As it turns out, I knew answers of the more than 90% of the questions asked. The powers that be (had) decided that 90+ is a good enough score to certify me as a SCJP.
Preparing for the exam does certainly improve awareness of the language, I must say. But it certainly is not enough you might want to read what Kathy and Bert said about this exam in their certification book. I am in total agreement with them.
Cheers!
