Can you understand why some people bribe to get a Ph.D. . I mean isn't it more shameful with a Ph.D. degree knowing less than one w/o a Ph.D.

But there seems to be a great demand for it: Germany Rocked By Allegations of Ph.D. Bribes

Why not? It's easier than working!
There's all sorts of diploma mills that will exchange cash for credentials. Personally, I've been thinking about buying a Doctorate in Divinity so everyone has to call me "reverend". Has a nice ring to it.
I used to work for a company doing outside consulting. A couple of the guys I worked with didn't have Bachelor's degrees but had a lot of domain knowledge (usually retired military or government employees), so a degree wasn't essential. One day, one of my coworkers updates his resume with a new BS. The boss found out and that guy was out the door so quick we didn't know what happened. There was no debate, the company's reputation was at stake and they couldn't risk someone misrepresenting themselves.

Plus you get a tax writeoff when you declare your house a parish.

I do not understand why people have this thing about degrees and papers.

Like Mark Twain once said, I never let schooling interfere with my education.
Yup.

By the way, bribes in Germany were around 20.000 €.

Don't think corruption starts at getting a degree. There is a prof. at a prominent university near me who just had to resign. Apparently, he was taking money from a drug company (legally), doing studies on their medicine (legally), but never bothered to report to anyone he was doing both.

MAJOR ethical violation there. The school 'helped' him resign.

Why, was he too cheap to pay the diploma mill so that the degree would really be his? Is that like being caught using pirated software?

I agree. Here's the link: http://aspose.com/file-tools
