Since I am also preparing for the SCJP 1.4 exam,
I would like to ask if it is alright to use the newly introduced 1.4 features where appropriate?

That's one of the main reasons I asked 
Plus there's the fact that the certifications now have a limited lifetime of 2 years so getting some practice with the new features is essential.
