my laptop mic doesn't work

the mic on my laptop doesn't work.

i have toshiba laptop & windows vista os.


when i go to:

start > control panel > sound > recording

i can see one micro phone with green tick (working status) - high definition audio device.

when i select this and click configure, it gives me some options like

start speech recognition
set up microphone
etc

when i click on set up microphone, i get three options

headset microphone
desktop microphone
others

since i have mic built in my laptop, i choose others, it gives me a sentence to read, but doesn't recognize my voice so don't go to next page.

what can be wrong?

i checked with sound recorder. it doesn't record any sound.

also, on gtalk, my friends can't listen to me.
