Is there a difference any more? I know a few years ago there was a pretty substantial price/performance difference between the two, but that seems to have vanished over the years. I usually rely on the system guides at Ars Technica when building. They're more in tune with the market than I. A brief look at their current guides lead me to believe that unless you are a elite gamer type, you won't see much difference.

Intel has been outperforming AMD for nearly the last 3 years. But you'll really only notice it if doing anything that requires the processor to actually work. Browsing the internet and reading documents isn't going to make a difference one way or the other. Even doing development, you aren't going to notice significant spikes. So asking such an open question won't get you very good answers, as you can see.

The interesting thing is that, looking at prices while I am writing this, AMD's really aren't significantly cheaper than Intel. If you glance at the other thread linked to by Joe, I paid around $220 for the processor and $200 for the motherboard. Give or take. That may seem high to some, but they are good quality pieces of hardware. Not the junk that Dell puts in their paperweights. I consider those good prices for the specs. You're mileage my vary.

Sadly true. The industry needs a strong AMD to keep Intel honest. Competition improves the breed and all that.

So if I can get the same performance for the same money, I buy an AMD just to keep the competition going. But last time I checked at the "very serious but not insane" performance level, Intel was delivering most for the same money. At the "insane" performance level, Intel is a clear winner, as they have the speed that AMD does not in the top end i7. They also cost a ton of money, the CPUs are expensive and the Motherboards are double the cost. I expect this to change over time.

That's not the point. The point is that your question is just as meaningless and unanswerable as my question. Especially if you don't provide any more information about what your requirements are.
