DynaActionForm and validator

hi all,
I am using a DynaActionForm to store parameters that are used to query the database (used in the where clause). However all these parameters are optional and should be used only if available. The parameters include Integer and Character datatype.
The problem is with the initialization of such parameters, as Integer parameters are initialized to 0 the database is queried using this value even when no such value is specified in the form.
Is there a way I can set the value to null in case the value is not specified in the form and is this possible using the initial attribute of the form-bean tag.
hope to get a reply.
