I have many pages on site which display data in tabular (using <table> HTML tag) format e.g. list of students (columns are: name, age, sex etc). I'd like to give a download option there so data can be downloaded in xls format.

Will I have to write custom code for this or any utility already does that?
If custom then POI API will be the way to go, right? Or any client side (JavaScript API) can help?

Thanks.

Did I post this here or it's been moved here from HTML & JS forum?

HTML & JS are not suited for this.

Why dont you go with simlpe Servlet option . Use ServletOutputStream and write bytes to the outputstream.
