focus() not working in firefox

Hi,
focus() function is not working in firefox
I need to set focus to an element (I am using firefox version 3.5.3)
is there any alternative for it?

the javascript function is:

function verifyCustomerId(customerId) {
	var valid = false;
	var str = customerId.value;
	var regex_pattern = new RegExp("^[0-9]{9}");

	if(!valid) {
		alert("Customer ID must be a 9 digit number");		
		document.getElementById("customerId").focus();
	}    

I am getting alert message, but focus is not set to customerId text box.

I have replaced my code with your suggested code

function verifyCustomerId(elem) {
	 if(!elem.value.match(/^\d{9}$/)) {  
         alert("Customer ID must be a 9 digit number");        
         elem.focus();  
     }     

with this code also focus is not set to customerId text box (but getting the alert message properly)

yes, cleared the cache and then executed once again, even though it is not working.

If I add one more alert message at the end, it is not getting displayed.

I have modified it as below:

	 if(! customerId.value.match(/^\d{9}$/)) {  
         alert("Customer ID must be a 9 digit number");        
         setTimeout("customerId.focus();",0);  
     }
