You don't need a smartphone. I use my ENV2 as an MP3 player and it cost about $70 last year. Now I think they're giving them away in Happy Meals.

old iPod are never fixed. Like toasters, once they break its not worth the time and money to fix.

Most consumer electronics are like this. Disposable, not repairable.

The Zune is getting rave reviews. Of course, no one has ever bought a Zune.

You do have cell phones in India, correct? I'm certain that some of them play MP3's. Just a suggestion.

Yes, but you get a mobile phone and an iPOD kind of a feature for just a little bucks more.

The screen on my iPod touch cracked, water got in the device and funny things started to happen. Because of the water damage Apple would not repair it under warranty so it would have cost me almost $200 to fix the screen - or about $300 to buy a new one (with more memory). I was about to crack and buy a new one when I stumbled on iFixit.com - most well known for their 'tear downs' of consumer products. They had a replacement screen and tool set for $50. Took me < 30 minutes to do it, AND I got to see the insides of the iPod Touch. It was awesome. The fixed screen and some time with the battery drained seems to have fixed the weird behavior as well.

The new Zune was released a month back. Its ind of expensive because it must be a superior product and its not available here so if you have anyone visiting the US or Asia you could look into it. I have an nano too and after 3 years the touch wheel is becoming unresponsive and just like apple computers its notoriously for freezing up randomly.
