Problem with escape = "false" and radioButtons

I try to use escape ="false" to display exponents.
When I use escape ="false" within selectOneRadio tag, the text 122. (escape is not working )

I cannot put escape ="false" within the selecItems tag because selectItems does not have an escape as an attribute.
I would rather not try to change selectItems to selectItem because responses is a list of items.

<t:selectOneRadio escape ="false" layout="pageDirection" value="#{takeTest.answer}">
<f:selectItems value="#{takeTest.responses}" />

Thank you for any suggestions how to make escape work.
