I guess I'm serving as technical lead for a proposal to one of our clients and it makes a great oppurtunity to get some good experience with this phase of the SD process. Are there any Agile/XP books that cover this topic well?

Sure, although how you go about it may depend on which flavor of "agile" you're using.

Personally, I like user stories. Honestly, I'd just search the web first before springing for a book, but the web search will turn up the usual suspects on the printed realm anyway.

It is sorta covered in the JavaRanch Style Guide.
