Woot? trim()

The

public class myString{
	public static void main(String [] args)
	{
		String x =" big surprise ";
		x= (x.toString() + x.length()) ;
		x=x.trim();
		System.out.println(x);
	}	
}    

>javac myString.java
>Exit code: 0
>java myString
big surprise 14
>Exit code: 0

I thought the answer should be "bigsurprise14"! However the answer is "big surprise 14". Please clarify my misunderstanding. If this has already been asked by someone else, please ignore this post..Thanks

		x= (x.toString() + x.length()) ; // you have concatenated first then trimmed, trim() 
                                         //removes whitespaces at the either end and not 
                                         //from middle.
		x=x.trim();
		System.out.println(x);
	}	
}
