There are a few books available with projects in eg Stephen Holzner, Java After Hours, and Herbert Schildt and James Holmes, the Art of Java.

I would recommend Effective Java, 2E, by Joshua Bloch.

In my opinion the best general-purpose Java book is Horstmann and Cornell. Make sure to get an up to date edition.

Agreed. The latest version is the 8th edition for both volumes one and two.

He didn't say it was an ebook, and we will not allow a link unless it is free and legal and I do not believe this book is available as a free and legal download.

I removed the name of the book in case anyone misunderstands.
