Assuming that I take this post to mean is there something that explains the API's...
Unless you are already familiar with either the APIs (or how to decipher them), the specification, or both, just reading them straight through won't help you much. I'd recommend going through their tutorials.
For example, if you don't get how to use Collections, Maps, ArrayLists, etc. go through the Collections tutorial!
Great thing about those tutorials, they have links to the APIs at relevant parts, so you get not only a feel for the subject you are covering, but how to translate the APIs into information you can actually use.

Jason;

Assuming that I take this post to mean is there something that explains the API's...

Yes, that is exactly what I was talking about. Thank you.
My first glance at the API's reminded me of a quote from a long forgotten wise man:

"I am continually amazed at a society that while exacting the cure, dispenses the poison."

Again, thank your for your help - I will check out the tutorials. This is a great site - isn't it!?

Yeah, it's alright
Don't let the APIs scare you, they can be daunting but in the long run, the more you familiarize yourself with them, the better off you'll be (ain't that the understatement of the year...)

Any problems if I move this to JIG (beginner)?

I imagine that Doco is looking at Assignment Java-6 Grains, which has as its stated purpose:
Purpose: ... to become more familiar with the java libraries.

I think it is appropriate for this forum.

I hope so. I saddled up the gray and signed on as drover today, so I'll be here 'til we get them doggies to the rail head at Omaha, I 'spect. The Gray 'is got some Mustang inner, but nutin' some hard ridin' won't cure.
Bringin' along my smoke pole too; might bag a moose on the way over the Rockies?
