Maybe through internet streaming, but there isn't an FM Tuner directly in the iPhone for you to use.

Not quite the same thing, but if BBC supports podcasts (and they probably do) you coulld listen to bbc shows this way. Podcast is simply a recording that you download to an ipod/mp3 player.

Here are the bbc podcasts. I listen to american npr this way. This is much better than radio as you can listen to your favorite shows on your schedule, not theirs. You can subscribe to podcasts via itunes (most are free) and whenever you open itunes you can automatically download any new podcasts that you subscribe to.

There is this Public Radio Tuner iPhone application result of unique collabration between American Public Media, National Public Radio, Public Radio Exchange, Public Interactive and Public Radio International!
This provides a lots of radio streams available for Free (from US I believe)!
You need to have a data plan (may be WIFI will do) to enjoy the streaming!

As i heard that Apple is developing an in-house iPhone and iPod Touch radio application, which will enable users to listen to FM radio on their existing devices, according to sources quoted by 9to5Mac.

Is there any hardware update or extension, like adding FM receiver?
Software upgrade alone might not do the trick (or may be if FM is available over the internet)?
