My current low-end scanner is just a pain. If you're willing to:

- scan in your page
- adjust the size to be scanned manually, every time
- adjust all the various contrast / brighrtness... sliders., everytime
- adjust the bit-depth, every time...

and so on...

you get a so-so scan.

If you're not willing to do all that, you get crap.

Who can recommend a decent scanner that can deal with real world documents (that might not be perfect), and just produce a decent image quality without a lot of hassle? (I'd rather spend $200 than $500)

Thanks!

Well, you are not really complaining about the scanner, but about the software that is bundled with it.

I've had a bunch of scanners over the years, and all of the bundled software focuses on the "easy for mass market users" rather than "do what I want".

My current scanner is a fairly modest Canon flatbed, its OK when you use Windows. I don't use it often enough to remember how to make it do what I want. I use it maybe once a month.

If the problem is mainly with the software, then you could try different software - you don't *have* to use the software that the manufacturer supplies with it. I've used VueScan a few years ago, which worked well.

I'm very happy with my Canon LiDE scanner.

Uses only USB power (no brick!) and the driver works fine under OS X.

I usually use it from Photoshop.
