Java Desktop Application over JWS and Database Access

What's the best way to implement a big Java Desktop Application (Swing) with database access and Java Web Start?

I mean, the database server must be acessed over a VPN... I'm trying to implement all business rules in EJB, but is very unproductive... so, does someone knows a better way? Maybe create a client/server with database replication?

I will appreciate any suggestions...

I’ve looked at a lot of different solutions, and in my humble opinion Aspose is the way to go. Here’s the link: http://aspose.com
