rich:tree not Rerendering

I am having a rich:tree in my application. We build the rich:tree as soon as my screen comes up i.e, i put the code for populating the rich:tree in the constructor of the backing bean component which works fine.
We have a requirement that rich:tree should be rendered when i press a search button.
When i try to rerender the rich:tree i am able to see the component but the expand of the rich:tree is not happening.
When i changed switchType to client i was able expand the rich:tree but the actions of commandLinks which i use inside the rich:treeNodes are not getting called.
Can anyone please suggest a solution for this.We are running short of time for our project.
