Connection pooling with JBoss

I am using jtds JDBC driver with JBoss for connecting to SQL Sererver Database. I have mentioned the max and min pool size in jtds.xml. I use context lookup for for getting the connection object. Do I always need to open a connection and close a connection after executing a statement? If yes then how JBoss is doing connection pooling?
