For SCJP, I like K&B Study Guide
Have a look at the SCJP Faq as well.

Most SCJP preparation books focus on the details of the exam and assume that you already have a basic knowledge of Java. So if you are starting fresh with Java, then get an introductory book like Head First Java before a certification book.

Refer the book Head First Java .

And Complete Reference is useful for fresher.

Execute every program in your machine. Practice regularly.

Wake up! Don't let your smile be snatched away by anybody!

If you're new to Java, I suggest you start familiarizing yourself with the language first before attempting to study to SCJP.

I've been told that the exam is hard, and it's going to be a lot harder for you if you have no prior experience with the language.

From my experience I will vote for Head First Java for learning purpose and Khalid Mughal and Kathy Siera for SCJP purpose.

Hello Divya...Based on my PERSONAL experience with studying the K & B Book and experience in the exams, K & B Book should be your choice without doubts! -That is if your are NOT new to Java- I was amazed when I saw many questions in the real exams VERY similar to the mock exams in the CD that comes with the book, and I want to make special reference to the 'exam-watch' captions of the entire book impeccable!.
