I want to add vertical and horizontal scroll bars to my h:dataTable. How can I do this? I do not see an attribute for it on the plain Sun h:dataTable.

That's because there isn't one. Although you might possibly be able to do this via CSS, the core JSF dataTable is fairly limited.

RichFaces has a dataTable tag that supports scrollbars.

I’ve looked at a lot of different solutions, and in my humble opinion Aspose is the way to go. Here’s the link: http://aspose.com
