I am so confused which one to choose. There are so many options:

There are ADSL 2 connections:

1. Standalone ADSL 2: You need a phone line to get it activated. You can continue using your phone from the phone service provider & you use internet (ADSL 2) from intenet service provider (ISP).

2. Bundled ADSL 2: You need a phone line to get it activated. You transfer your phone connection to ISP. Now you use phone & internet both from ISP.

3. Naked ADSL 2: You need a phone line to get it activated. Once your internet connection is setup, you can terminate phone line. A activated phone line is needed to get internet. This is strange but they don't provide internet without phone line.

There are ADSL 1 plans also. I don't know the exact difference b/w 1 & 2. I just know that ADSL 2 is faster than 1.

There are some modems provided by http://www.unwired.com.au. I don't know what kind of internet connection it is? ADSL 1 or 2 or something else?

There are wireless connections.

I don't need the phone. I just need internet. I don't want to go for wireless plans as they usually are slow & expensive. I don't want to purchase unwired modem as it’s useless some where else.

I'm using a WiMAX internet connection from a popular ISP here in Sri Lanka. The speed is extremely good, but it's bit expensive than the wire-line ADSL internet, which is being used by most of the people here.

DSL uses the in place POTS wires. Any rules about needing a POTS telephone line are just business rules by the provider. For years, I had DSL separate from my telephone.

The name itself gives a hint, in Telco speak its Digital Subscriber Line. Meaning the line from the Central Office switch to your house. Of course, the telco back ends have been all digital for decades in most of the world.

Sadly, DSL is sold by the local telephone monopoly, or their agents, and most telcos are not very advanced technically. Well, that's not true, Bell Labs did fabulous work, and the behind the scenes stuff in cool. Things like swapping out software in the switches while it is running. But the business side of most telcos are still in the last century, of not still in the late 1800s.
