XHTML - xml:space clarification

I came across a xhtml code today.



I receive a validation error according to http://validator.w3.org/check if the doc type points to xhtml1.1 but the same is valid with doctype pointing to xhtml 1.0.

I did read about the xml:space which is present in both versions.

Why is this difference? how to rectify this?

I tried doing this way changing the doc type



but it is not rendering properly in the UI.

looking forward for a reply.
