There is no such thing as a best DB for Swing. What are your requirements? That will help determine what you should use.

Greg is right. Databases and Swing are two very distinct technologies, and using JDBC it doesn't matter which database server you use.

If you want an embedded database engine, SQLite, Derby and HSQLDB are good options. For dedicated (external) servers check out MySQL and PostgreSQL.

Apache Derby now comes bundled with the standard JDK. Cannot remember the version but I think it might be from 1.5 You can run the same JDK installer and choose the derby installation.
