Java's Unicode Byte Ordering

Is there any fixed Unicode byte ordering used by JVM? Or is it depending on the locale of the machine the jvm is running?

I didn't find any mention of big-endian or little-endian when I looked in the Java™ Language specification. I suspect (but am not certain) that it is little-endian on Windows and big-endian on *nix, but might be mistaken on that point.
