Netbeans questions

Say I have a two java source files and they talk to each other like a client/server program would. How do I go about running them using netbeans? I have ran the server in the DOS prompt and then ran the client i netbeans. But when I login with the client code and the message is sent to the server I can no longer step into anything, the client code just sits there. Is this because the server is not sending anything back to the client(which would trigger some code on the client to run)?
