"Best" is a relative term. There is nothing like an absolute best.
I started off with Core Java by Horstmann and Cornell and found it easy to understand and learn.
Before that I used the Herbert Schildt book.
Visit a book store, browse through several options and pick the one you like best.
I don't hnow, but howrever there is goods tutorials in Sun's site.

For me, Head First Java was perfect. It doesn't go in-depth into Swing, but it covers all the essentials. What it doesn't cover is easy to pick up afterwards.
