Hi guys ,

I am planning to take the scjp exam and i just wanted a rough time sketch on how long it would take to prepare . I have coded in C,C++ for around two years but have absolutely no knowledge of java . I am planning to dedicate 4 hrs everyday towards this exam . When do you think i should book the exam ,,,? Also could you explain whether and when the SCJP+ exam will start .

Thanks for your help

I think you should start by first reading "Head first Java" and then move on to the Exam book SCJP K & B . Well, i also did the same. i studied C while i was in university (undergraduate) and had no knowledge of java. So i found Headfirst Java the best book for a beginner just like me.It took me one month to complete the whole book. During this month i read the book and tried to code desktop applications (like calculator, texteditor, messenger etc .)on my own , in order to practice. The more you make code of your own , the more you will get to understand Java. Well this is something not required for exam. This whole activity took me one month. Then i started studying SCJP K & B and started my preparation from exam point of view. I am going to take the test soon ( this month). It is up to you now , how long you take and how much you do the mocks and revise the book. Well i think at least one to two months are required for SCJP K & B and doing mocks.

hope this is helpful to you.

one more thing to point out : since you already have Object oriented programming concept & experience (because you already have learned C++) , you may take less than one month to finish and practice "Head First Java"(you may take only 10 to 15 days). ( I did not have any Object oriented programming concept )

My plan is a little bit different:
- 13-16 days for whole "Thinking in Java"
- 5-10 days for SCJP K & S (5.0)
- 1 day for differences between 5.0 and 6.0
- 3 days for mock tests

Whole preparation:23-30 days (but i'm ready for some delays).

I don't know if it's ok, but we'll see

Hi piotr ,

That schedule looks good , though i should ask whether you have any experience of coding in java or are you planning to study this comprehensively for the month

On my university I had subject called "event-driven programming"/"event-based programming". There was 1-semester Java lecture, but it wasn't perfect. My only coding experience (apart from coding to prepare to SCJP) is making a little game on mobile phone then. One year ago I started to learn to SCJP, but haven't done much (I didn't have time). So I'm going to study it comprehesively for the month.

I plan to pass the SCJP 6.0, and then immediately start looking for job. I think that SCJP would be something more than majority of other students have. I don't plan to be guru of Java within one month. I'm going to learn much more in job that I will find.

Hi,
I am planning to give SCJP for quiet sometime, but didn't get chance, because got down with a massive accident.
Now as i am again back to programming world for a while, i have the following schedule.

7th Feb - 19th Feb = K & B
20th Fed - K & B Master Exam
21-25th - Revision of K & B
26th - 5th March - As much mocks i can solve.
6th March - One mock exam
7th March - 12 o Clock Exam

Hope this time, i stick by my deadline and no health issues arise. Best of luck guys. Lets make our preparation rocking
and crack SCJP.

Best Regards,
