Greetings, All:

Yes, I know we all live and die in Java, but least here at Wayne State University in Detroit, we are about to take Java/JSP and jump deep into the Adobe Flex 3 technologies quickly via BlazeDS/LiveCycle/Spring/Hibernate/WebLogic/JSP/<you get the point>. I have been a big Fan of the Javaranch since 2006. I want the Flex/BFlex (Sungardre Banner Community) people to know that there are safe shores for the Flex community at the ranch. Therefore, I would like to request a new forum branch be opened as Adobe Flex or Flex/Actionscript.

Educational Customers - Check out Sungard Summit 2010

Thanks

Have there been many questions here about Adobe Flex 3? What makes you think there will be enough traffic to warrant a forum devoted to that?

Are there books on flex 3?

Is there one staff member willing to moderate a new forum?

I think it would be a good forum, but the first step is to make sure that we don't open it and it is DOA.

There has been a small trickle of Flex question in the Other Lanaguages forum. There are probably plenty of Flex questions out there, but Flex developers probably live in the Adobe forums rather than here. However the mixed technology nature of Flex (Java Servlets are the backend of choice for a bunch of Flex applications, and frameworks that exist (e.g. BlazeDS)) might warrent something here.

There are plenty of Flex books out there.

Well, I think there is potential.

If these two criteria are met, then I think we should move forward:

1) We have one staff member willing to harvest lightning to bring it to life.

2) There are at least three books that could be used for book promotions.

Paul and Fred:

This believe that there will be a lot of traffic regarding Adobe Flex 3 now and the next few months special regarding the Sungard (www.sct.com) and educational communities. Right now, the Banner "BFLEX" community was started on Google Groups I believe, but they don't have the penetration power you folks a Javaranch does. The Sungard Banner Summit 2010 in San Franciso Aprill 11-14 will be the big jump out point for where SCT will take Flex.

The Sungard Banner Product is an ERP system which is found in more than 90% of all university and colleges world wide. The software suite sits on top of Oracle. Recently, SCT announced that they are moving toward a fully implemented M-V-C using the Flex framework (See Cairngorm - Flex/Spring/PL/SQL/JPA/Hibernate as well as the BlazeDS and LiveCycle by Adobe.) Right now most of the educational community are talking and building in Silo because no one knows where to jump in, or what questions to ask at the moment. I am ready to Lobby for the Javaranch to be "That place," to go for help from the Java and Framework experts.

I attended a session with James Ward, Flex Evangelist, Adobe Inc., here in Detroit, he greatly presented what this technology was and where it was going, and that Java plays a big role in it all. My thought is that maybe we could reach out to Mr. Ward for one of the book giveway's as he had done before at the group meeting, but host him as you normally do here on the Javaranch.

Example of interest . . .
FYI . . . I just pulled this up from the Detroit Java User Group:

Subject: [FLEX-GROUP] Michigan Flex Users Group Meeting TOMORROW 2/11 - Creating Components in Flex with Jeff Houser

Hey Everybody!

For our February meeting, we are lucky to have Jeffery Houser from Dot Com It Consulting and Flextras to do a presentation for us on building Flex Components. This will be a beginner / intermediate topic that will focus on building extendable components that you can use within your own Flex applications.

Jeff's bio is as follows :
Jeffry Houser is a technical entrepreneur that likes to share cool stuff with other people.
Jeffry Houser is the Brains behind Flextras, a set of user interface Flex Components that save you time and help you create better Flex applications. Jeffry has a Computer Science degree from the days before business met the Internet and has solved a problem or two in his programming career. In 1999, Jeffry started DotComIt, an Adobe Solutions Partner specializing in Rich Internet Applications with Flex and ColdFusion.

Jeffry is an Adobe Community Professional and produces The Flex Show, a podcast that includes expert interviews and screencast tutorials. He also hosts the Flextras Friday Lunch Podcast, a weekly live Q&A session where you can get your questions answered, and also runs a site AskTheFlexpert.com where you can get your questions answered privately. Jeffry has spoken at user groups and conferences all over the US, is the co-manager of the Hartford CT Adobe User Group, author of three technical books, and over 30 articles.

In his spare time Jeffry is a musician, old school adventure game aficionado, recording engineer, and he owns a Wii. Michigan State University, like Wayne State University is another major Sungard Banner Site for Future Flex Activity.

So, in a nut shell, that is my case. Folks are going to need a lot of help with understanding this Framework.

Three Books:

1) First Steps in Flex by Bruce Eckel President, MindView Inc.
James Ward Flex Evangelist, Adobe Inc.

2) Flex 3 in Action by Tariq Ahmed

3) And, lastly, Learn Flex! Because it's time to get PAID!!! by ME if y'all take too long to move on this (smile - Flex Developer $80,000 - $140,000). But I know that there is at least one more.

But, seriously, for us Oracle Back-end Database developer, we really need someone from Adobe or whoever to step and begin the discussion on BlazeDS and LiveCycle as well.

Thanks

Where did you get that 90% number?
