The letters that represent Ant and Maven are different. Both are build tools and the way they handle the build process in different. Try googling for more.

To say Maven is simply a build tool is overly simplistic. Ant is a build tool. Maven is a project management tool handling most aspects of project automation such as building, testing, reporting, etc. Ant + Ivy can do most of what Maven does out of the box but you'll have to configure it yourself. The choice to use one over the other is up to the individual/team and both camps are quite passionate about why the alternative is worse.

You may want to check Gradle, it is a mix between Ant and Maven but employes Groovy for build files.

The OP didn't ask for suggestions. Merely what the different between Ant and Maven are. Let's not confuse him with more choices.
