Why are topics marked as 'no new messages' even though I haven't read them yet?

Ranchers,

I'm following several forums on the Ranch (what a great place, by the way!).

Most times, a topic will appear with a new messages icon (the yellow folder) indicating that the thread has topics which I haven't seen yet (at least, I assume that's what it means).

Sometimes, however, a topic will have new postings, but it will still show the no new messages icon. This happens even though I'm logged-in and the new post was done within the last few hours.

Once a topic gets a new posting, what is it that triggers the transition from the new message icon to the no new messages icon? Do I need to read the topic, or is just looking at the list of threads on the forum enough?

I hope I've explained the issue clearly enough.

Thanks,

I'm not sure, but I think part of it is the first topic in a forum. Even if I haven't read all the other topics in the forum, as long as I've read the most recent post it will not show that there are unread posts in the forum list.

Well, in this forum (Ranch Office), I show one topic as having unread postings, and it's the third one in the list. The two topics above it (both created by me) show no new messages (posts). I've refreshed the page a couple times, and that third topic still shows the new messages icon.

However, none of the other topics in the forum show new messages, even though I've looked at very few of them.

If you look at the bottom of the page, you see what the folders stand for.

The yellow folder is only shown for topics that have been created since the last time you logged in.

Thanks, but I mentioned in my OP that the yellow folder stood for new messages. I'm sorry if it wasn't clear that I had already looked at these descriptions.

Although I believe that's true, I don't think it's the whole story. It seems the yellow folder is used for topics which contain new messages (not just topics that are themselves new).

I've seen topics which on a previous visit were depicted with a non-yellow folder, but then after getting a new posting, were shown with a yellow folder. This implies that the yellow folder will show when the thread has new messages (as the description for the icon implies).

It turns yellow when the topic is new or it has new messages posted in it since the last time you visited.

Thank you. We're now on the same page. Now, please have a look at my OP.

To follow-up, today, I noticed several new messages posted to threads in the EJB forum which I've yet to read, yet none of them show the yellow folder. Is this a bug? Can this be fixed?

Thanks,

The algorithm that posts are marked as "new" with JForum is, indeed, kinda weak. I, too, would prefer something much more accurate.
