set focus in textbox inside sliding bar

i am using a sliding bar on my homepage.i want to set
focus on a textbox inside the sliding bar but

  document.getElementById("userid").focus()   

is giving error.
is there any way to do this?

Error was Cannot set focus to an element which is not present or invisible.

Are you sure it is "userid" and not "userID" or "userId" or something similar?
