One of the most common problems I've seen is developers trying to develop an application using a web technology without first learning how to use the technology. For example, you want to use Servlets and JSP, you first need to learn how to build applications using Servlets and JSP.

What type of applications do you want to build? What web technology do you want to use?

There are a lot of resources available that will help you in the areas you want.
